Visual Arts Workshops - Batik Sadza Style Workshop

Batik Style (Sudza) African Influenced Fabrics

Hand Painted Batik Style (Sudza) African Influenced Fabrics

Expected Outcomes:

The ‘Sudza’ technique originates in Southern Africa. It is similar to batik except you do not have to use hot wax, which could be hazardous for obvious reasons. It is a mixture of semolina & water. This technique is meant to look earthy, free and hand painted.

Participants will learn:

  • Design techniques & how to create own designs by observing inspiring African designs. Their images do not need to be perfect or totally realistic. This style of African art is more interested in design and colour rather than, for example, a perfect rendition of an image drawn in the correct proportions
  • Colour mixing & matching
  • Mark out & draw images onto fabric
  • How to create outlines & decoration for designs using sqeezey bottles filled with ‘Sudza’. The bottle is used just like a pen. Once the ‘sadza’ is dry (the following day) you paint over & into the areas in between the ‘sadza’ lines
  • Different painting techniques & how to create a variety of textures
  • When paint is dry the ‘sudza’ is washed & scraped off to reveal unique batik style designs
